This is an important role in a busy hospital out-patient department. Volunteers welcome patients and their families and offer refreshments, hospitality and companionship if appropriate during what can be a stressful time.
Volunteers welcome patients and their families on arrival. After the receptionist, they are usually the first person visitors to the department see therefore, they have an important role in helping to create a positive first impression. Volunteers look after patients' and visitors' comfort and well-being by providing light refreshments and if appropriate companionship wihist they are waiting to be seen and also during treatment. Light kitchen duties are undertaken as part of the role. During quiet times, volunteers may help staff with minor clerical tasks (e.g.photocopying) and other mutually agreed light duties. Volunteers do not fulfil any nursing, clerical or portering duties.
