Ref 44 - 1625
Farmland bird surveys are offered to all farmers and crofters throughout the Highlands and Western Isles. When a farmer requests a survey we match them up with a trained local volunteer. This involves carrying out 3 or 4 farm surveys during April - July and recording all birds seen and heard on to the farm map. Volunteering for this project provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about farmland birds and allows us to give specific advice to individual farmers based on the species found.
Training, maps and farmer contacts are provided by the RSPB. The farmers involved are enthusiastic and interested in the birds on their land and welcome responsible volunteers and their findings. The results from the volunteers survey are returned to the project officer, who creates a species list and unique ‘bird map’ of the farm, to give to the farmer along with advice on how to maintain or enhance wildlife habitats on their land.
(On farms and crofts throughout the Highland and Western Isles. Opportunities are dependent on the location of farmers/crofters who request a survey.)
